    No work on the history of the oratorio has yet appeared in the English language that is comparable in scope and treatment with Smither's comprehensive four-volume work. Volumes 1 and 2, published by the University of North Carolina Press in , treated the oratorio in the Baroque era, while Volume 3, published in , explored the genre in. Years ago I read volume one closely and concluded that it was a pretty terrible book, at least the first 80% of it. Now I've recently finished reading volumes 2 and 3, which I found interesting, and conclude that it's a shame the first volume is so bad because I'll bet many readers are dissuaded from reading the remaining two volumes, which are /5(59).
